CONVENOR’S REPORT
Since our last AGM, we have lost the services of Archie Martin, John Biggins, along with Fiona Macpherson, our short-term secretary. I thank them for their input into the work of CCC.
Although no members of the public put forward their names in the interim Community Council elections, subsequently we have been fortunate in welcoming Catriona McCulloch and Ela Grabowska as co-opted members.
Throughout the year, we continued to strive to do our best for Campbeltown. The CC’s charitable organization, Campbeltown Community Windfarm Fund (CCWF) disbursed funds to 47 organisations and projects. Young people benefitted through grants to Campbeltown Brass Band, Kintyre Pipe Band, Campbeltown Sea Cadets, School of Dancing and local Primary Schools through their Parents’ Groups. The elderly were not forgotten; grants were awarded to the Senior Citizens Monday Club and Old Pals Club. Sporting groups figured prominently, from badminton to football to golf and sailing. Arts and Heritage also received funding for various projects from mending a church roof to help with Community Drama Festival and Songwriters Festival. Grants were also awarded to improved various Community Facilities and Services.
The completion of the Jubilee Coastal Path was our main achievement this year. Despite the difficulty in locating the landowner, getting answers from the planning department, sourcing the necessary funding, work started on the path in early January and following the installation of the new bridge the CC held an official opening on 5th June.
With the closure of the Main Street branch of Boots Pharmacy, the remaining pharmacy in Longrow has come under sustained pressure to cope with the volume of prescriptions. Many members of the public have complained about the long waiting times to receive their medicines, stock availability etc. The CC has campaigned along with three young pharmacists from Glasgow to open a new Campbeltown Pharmacy.
In response to the Scottish Government’s request to consult with our local community about the future of Local governance, Campbeltown CC held a public meeting on Tuesday 17th January 2024, Democracy Matters. While the numbers attending were disappointing, those present did have some interesting discussions and ideas.
Roads The CC was concerned with the negative impact of the road closures on the A83. Transport Scotland and BEAR Scotland were contacted as the CC had received several complaints regarding the lack of consideration given to the businesses and population of Campbeltown and surrounding area.
The CC was delighted to see the resurfacing of the Esplanade at long last.
The Flood Prevention Scheme has been mostly completed with the roads being reinstated to a good standard, although the CC has concerns regarding the safety of the flood pit at Tomaig Road.
The CC was happy to provide funding to the British Legion to purchase bunting and flags to decorate the town to commemorate the80th anniversary of the D-Day landings
Members of the public were welcomed to meetings. Among the concerns they identified were the problems of obtaining feedback from Argyll & Bute’s Planning department, and lack of Electric Vehicle Charging points.
